Wamego
A Documentary: Making Movies Anywhere
Reviewed by Brad Jewell
Before watching Wamego, I expected a simple preview of Steve Balderson’s upcoming tragedy, Firecracker. Once the movie started, I realized that I was as far off base as L.A. is from that small Kansas town.
Wamego allows the audience, whether they be the fan, the press, or even an aspiring movie-maker themselves, to walk beside him and his family as they strive to emancipate a movie locked away in Balderson’s brain. The documentary shows the work they put into everything from building set elements to the actually filming.
Balderson, along with his father, Clark, the producer, lets the audience in on what they have discovered throughout the creative process. Clark, with roots in construction, brings a dose of no-nonsense business ethics and quite simply tells how no individual involved in the film could do it all on there own, but as we see throughout the film, the whole is definitely greater than its constituents, and we get to see it all come together.
One thing is certain; Wamego will have a league of moviemakers clicking their heels to be transported to the Kansan, Do-It-Yourself state of mind. However, once there, they will surely see the heart and drive, evidenced by Balderson, is the true spirit needed to make a great film.
