Director's Statement:

As a filmmaker who has navigated the industry as a gay man, I previously described myself as “a filmmaker who happens to be gay.” However, with my 20th feature film, “Love, Venezia,” I fully embrace and proudly declare my identity as a gay filmmaker. This film marks a profound shift in my career; it is not just a queer story—it’s my story.

From the first frame to the last, “Love, Venezia” is an exploration of my own journey through heartbreak, love, and self-discovery. This is the first time I’ve shown my true self in my filmmaking, making every scene a reflection of my heart and spirit. This film stands out in my body of work as a vivid declaration of my identity and artistic vision. “Love, Venezia” represents everything I’ve aspired to create since I first picked up a camera. It’s a deeply personal piece, a chance to contribute meaningfully to our ongoing conversations about love and acceptance.

In “Love, Venezia,” I offer an honest glimpse into my experiences as a gay man. Unlike many queer films that dwell on darkness—violence, trauma, disease—our film celebrates love, connection, and self-discovery. It’s a positive, uplifting queer love story that paints our community in a beautiful, hopeful light. It’s time we challenge the stereotypes, showing the world the full, vibrant spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community.

By presenting this film, I aim to enrich the cultural dialogue about love and acceptance and to change how we see each other in this diverse world. It is my mission to transform perspectives and encourage a broader understanding of all our stories, regardless of whether we’re gay, straight, or anywhere in between.
