Another interesting subject for a documentary would be about how the film industry is elitist, disorganised and has no capacity for nurturing real talent, that it is a monolithic and archaic machine where its executives are too afraid to take risks, an industry that makes the music industry look as ruthlessly effective as Chairman Mao's Red Army. And whaddayaknow, someone made it. Steve Balderson, the independent filmmaker who wrote, produced and directed the cinematically epic Firecracker staring Mike Patton and Karen Black, has attempting to convey the frustration an auteur that operates outside of the usual parameters of what's accepted will face. Wamego Strikes Back tells us the stuff they didn't want you to know. About the problems as a filmmaker that you could face with distribution, or with inept agents, or about Hollywood's autocratic and almost Mafioso stranglehold on all things film. In Wamego Strikes Back you see one man and his dad stand up to the bullyboys, with unerring steadfastness. It's a compelling movie that will show you the pitfalls of not playing the game, and if that weren't enough for you, the fact I actually make a cameo appearance - in the background at the Raindance Film festival asking a question very sheepishly and inaudably, should be reason enough for you to track it down and, I dunno, masturbate.
