Steve Balderson's Phone Sex is an interesting entity. In the official description, it claims that it's "a bit pop art mixed with NPR and a dash of naughtiness," which is about as well as anything I can think of to describe it. Basically, a number of people (celebrities and non-celebrities alike) left phone messages answering the question, "What is Sexy?" No, this isn't a Victoria's Secret commercial; rather, it's an interesting experiment in filmmaking. There is no structural narrative, and the visuals that overlay the answers range from sexy to artistic to random and having nothing to do with sex whatsoever. It's an odd mix that works well at times and leaves you scratching your head at others.
What ultimately keeps the film interesting, though, is not the visuals, but the content of the messages. They range from the poetic to the vulgar to the humorous, and it's always interesting to see what the next person is going to say. As for the DVD itself, the copy we received for review is an early screening advance, so I'm unable to say yet whether the final product will have any extra features or not.
Overall, Phone Sex is more for the artistic set than it is for people looking for a movie proper. Director Steve Balderson deserves credit for trying something new and different, and I applaud the creativity of his ideas. If you like things a bit off the beaten path, Phone Sex should keep you interested.
